What happens at your appointment

Appointments take 20 to 30 minutes. Here's what to expect:

1
A quick chat

About your symptoms and any history of ear problems, infections or surgery.

2
A look in your ears

With an otoscope, so we can see how much wax there is and what kind.

3
Removal

Using the method that's safest for your ears. We'll explain what we're doing as we go.

4
A final check

To make sure your ears are clear, and a quick word on what we found.

Three ways we remove ear wax

Usually first choice

Microsuction

A small suction tube gently lifts the wax out while we watch closely through magnifying loupes. No water goes into your ear, which is why it's usually our first choice, and the one we'd normally use if you've had a perforated eardrum or ear surgery. It's a bit noisy, like a tiny vacuum close to your ear, but most people find it comfortable.

Modern ear syringing

Electronic irrigation (modern ear syringing)

If you're looking for ear syringing in Bolton, this is today's version. Instead of the old hand-pumped metal syringe, an electronic machine sends a steady, controlled flow of body-temperature water into the ear to wash softened wax out. It isn't suitable for everyone, so we'll always check first.

For dry or hard wax

Manual removal

Hard or dry wax sitting near the entrance of the ear canal can sometimes be eased out with fine instruments. We often use this alongside microsuction.

Why people in Bolton come to us for ear wax removal

Most GP surgeries in Bolton no longer offer routine ear syringing, so a lot of our patients come to us after being told to "go private". We've been looking after ears on Chorley New Road since 2013, and over 400 patients have left us five-star reviews on Google.

We're an independent practice, not a chain. You'll be seen by Nish or Claudia, the same audiologists who carry out our hearing tests and hearing aid fittings, so if anything else needs a closer look, you're already in the right place.

Still sounds muffled once the wax is gone?

Sometimes wax isn't the whole story. If things still sound dull after your ears are clear, just ask us about a free hearing consultation. There's no pressure. We're independent, so there's nothing we're required to sell you.

Can't get to the clinic?

We also offer home visits for ear wax removal. Call us on 01204 274000 to check availability and cost for your area.

What our Bolton patients say

Ear wax removal in Bolton: your questions

Do you still do ear syringing? +
Yes, in its modern form. We use electronic irrigation, which washes wax out with a gentle, controlled flow of body-temperature water rather than the old hand-pumped syringe. Your audiologist will check your ears first and recommend irrigation or microsuction depending on what's safest for you.
How much does ear wax removal cost? +
£50 for one ear and £60 for both. If there turns out to be no wax to remove, we'll do an ear health check instead (a hearing screen plus tympanometry) for £20.
Should I use olive oil drops before my appointment? +
It can help. Using olive oil drops for a few days beforehand softens hard wax and can make removal quicker. If you're not sure, ask when you book and we'll tell you whether it's worth doing.
Does microsuction hurt? +
Most people find it comfortable. It's noisy, and some people feel a slight tickle or brief dizziness, which settles quickly. If anything feels uncomfortable, tell us and we'll stop.
Can I come after work? +
Yes. Our Bolton clinic stays open until 8pm on Tuesdays, so you don't need to take time off. Book online or call 01204 274000.
Can I get seen today? +
Same-day appointments are often available. Call 01204 274000 and we'll see what we can do.

When to see a doctor instead

If you have sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, discharge from your ear, or dizziness that won't settle, please contact your GP or NHS 111 straight away rather than booking wax removal. These symptoms need a medical assessment first.
