Ear wax removal - safe, gentle, effective
Ear wax is a natural and healthy substance, but excessive build-up can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms including blocked ears, hearing loss, tinnitus, earache and dizziness. When ear drops and home remedies haven't worked, professional removal is the safest and most effective solution.
At Fresh Hearing, all ear wax removal is carried out by fully qualified HCPC-registered audiologists - the same clinicians who conduct your hearing assessments. This means if we notice anything beyond wax build-up, you're already in the right hands.

Book NowOur ear wax removal techniques
We offer two proven methods of ear wax removal. Our specialists will assess your ears and recommend the most appropriate technique for your situation.
Microsuction
Microsuction is widely regarded as the safest and most effective method of ear wax removal. A small, gentle suction device is used to carefully extract wax under direct visualisation - without the need for water.
- No water used - suitable for perforated eardrums
- Performed under direct visualisation
- Quick and comfortable procedure
- Immediate results in most cases
- Suitable for most patients including hearing aid users
Ear Irrigation
Ear irrigation (also known as ear syringing) uses a controlled flow of warm water to gently flush wax from the ear canal. It is a well-established and effective treatment, particularly for softer wax deposits.
- Gentle, warm water irrigation
- Effective for softer wax
- Comfortable and well-tolerated
- Pre-softening drops recommended beforehand
- Available at both clinic locations
Instrumentation
Instrumentation involves using fine instruments to carefully remove wax from the ear canal. Particularly useful where wax is dry or impacted and suction alone is insufficient.
- Effective for dry or impacted wax
- Performed under direct visualisation
- Often combined with microsuction
- Suitable when suction alone is insufficient
- Available at both clinic locations
Your appointment, step by step
Your comfort and safety are our priority throughout the procedure. Here is what to expect at your ear wax removal appointment.
Your specialist will examine both ears using an otoscope to assess the amount and type of wax present and confirm the most appropriate method of removal.
The chosen technique is performed carefully and comfortably. Most procedures take between 15 and 30 minutes. You may hear sounds of suction or feel slight pressure - this is normal.
After removal, your ears are checked again to confirm the wax has been fully cleared and your ear canals are healthy.
Your specialist will provide personalised aftercare advice and recommend when you may need your next appointment, based on how quickly your ears produce wax.
Before your appointment
To help soften the wax and make removal easier, we recommend using olive oil or sodium bicarbonate drops for 3 to 5 days before your appointment. This is not always essential but can improve the experience.
Drops are available from most pharmacies. Apply 2 to 3 drops per ear, twice daily.
