What to expect when you visit

Your appointment will take 20 to 30 minutes. We start by asking about your symptoms and ear history, then look in your ears with an otoscope to see what we're dealing with. Once we've agreed the best way to clear the wax, we'll remove it, check your ears again and let you know how everything looks.

How we clear blocked ears

Our usual first choice

Microsuction

Microsuction is dry, so no water goes into your ear. We work under magnifying loupes so we can see exactly what we're doing, using a fine suction tube to draw the wax out. It's generally the safest option if you're prone to ear infections or have had a perforated eardrum.

Modern take on syringing

Electronic irrigation

A lot of people in Haslingden and Rossendale still ask us for ear syringing. What we use now is electronic irrigation, which is a gentle, steady flow of warm water controlled by a machine rather than pumped by hand. It's good for soft wax, and we'll always check it's right for your ears before we start.

For dry or stuck wax

Fine instruments

Where wax is dry and stuck near the opening of the ear canal, we can lift it out carefully with small hand instruments, often alongside microsuction.

Independent care in the Rossendale Valley

Fresh Hearing is an independent practice, founded in 2013. You'll be seen by Nish or Claudia, not a different face every visit, and they're the same audiologists who carry out our hearing tests and hearing aid fittings. Over 400 patients across Rossendale and Bolton have left us five-star reviews on Google.

What our Rossendale patients say

Common questions from Rossendale patients

Why won't my GP syringe my ears any more? +
Most GP surgeries locally have stopped offering routine ear syringing, so many people now need to go privately. We offer both microsuction and modern electronic irrigation, carried out by HCPC-registered audiologists.
My ears feel completely blocked. What should I do? +
Avoid cotton buds or anything else in the ear, as they can push wax further in. A few days of olive oil drops can help soften it while you wait for your appointment. Then book online or call 01706 215479.
Is microsuction safe if I've had a perforated eardrum? +
It's usually the method we'd choose, because no water goes into the ear. Let us know about any past perforation, ear surgery or grommets when you book, and we'll check carefully before we start.
Is the clinic easy to get into? +
Yes. The Haslingden clinic is on the ground floor with step-free access, and there's on-street parking outside plus a public car park a couple of minutes' walk away.
What if there's no wax? +
Then we won't charge for removal. Instead we'll do an ear health check, a hearing screen and tympanometry, for £20, so you still leave knowing what's going on.

When to see a doctor instead

Sudden hearing loss, severe ear pain, discharge, or dizziness that doesn't settle all need a medical assessment first. Please contact your GP or NHS 111 straight away rather than booking wax removal.
